Poole science fair builds inquiry skills for military-connected students

Students at Poole Elementary School presented individual and class projects at the school’s annual science fair, applying the scientific method from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Kindergarten and first-grade classes conducted group experiments focused on observable phenomena, collecting data together and forming basic predictions. Students in grades two through five designed and carried out independent projects. They identified questions, developed hypotheses, controlled variables, analyzed results and reached evidence-based conclusions. Topics ranged from plant biology and chemical reactions to environmental engineering.

“Watching a second grader confidently explain their independent variable or a fifth grader analyze anomalous data points reminds us that children are capable of remarkable critical thinking when given the structured framework and encouragement to explore,” said Mary Thompson, a member of the school’s STEAM committee.

The event reflects DoWEA’s mission to educate, engage and empower military-connected students. Frequent moves and deployments require adaptability; the scientific method offers a consistent approach to problem-solving that travels with students. The same habits of observation, testing and revision that produce strong science projects also support the clear thinking needed for informed citizenship and civic responsibility.

Poole’s STEAM committee—led by Chair and Coordinator Leanne Schmotzer with members Mary Thompson and Jacqueline Perkins—organized the fair over several months with support from classroom teachers. Volunteer judges from the community evaluated projects and spoke with students about STEM pathways.

Teachers guided kindergarten and first-grade group work and provided scaffolding for upper-grade independent research. School leaders thanked both the faculty and the volunteer judges for making the school-wide effort possible.

As projects are put away, students leave with more than completed boards. They carry a practical framework for examining the unknown—one that strengthens both academic skills and the habits of reasoned inquiry valued in military families and in a free society.
